The island of Folegandros lived on the margins and in autonomy until 1980, lost in the barren line of the Aegean Sea like the rest of the islands, while until 1969 it was a place of exile for political prisoners. Each family produced what it needed and what was necessary for its survival. For this reason many horizontal stone walls were built over time, terracing the slopes, in order to create arable soils. Contact with the rest of the world was limited to the surrounding islands maintained by fishermen and traders.
